Advocacy

We look out for the well-being of our neighbors.

One afternoon, a new employee was working in his office in our building. Our building is quite old and a portion of his office was once an apartment to the building’s caretaker. While he was working, Brenda, our Program Director, asked him to please move his work elsewhere for a few minutes. Brenda noticed that one of our children was badly in need of a shower. Since the heat had been shut off in the young girl’s home, her only opportunity to clean herself was using the shower in his office.

This is just one of many ways we care for our neighbors. Some other acts of advocacy are structured programs, and include:

Nourishment   Our children eat breakfast and lunch at school, and for most, the meal they receive at the After School Program is their evening mealOn average, the After School Program serves over 4,000 meals to young people annually.

Counseling  Every day, our children battle peer pressure to drop out of school, join a gang or begin a life of crime.

Compounding this pressure isthe internal struggle between performing well in school and harming the relationships with friends who view academic success as “un-cool” or “selling out”.

Our counseling efforts help these fragile young minds stay focused, stay in school and find success in life.

Tutoring   Every school day, children study and work with volunteer tutors.

Summer Day Camp

Many families living in and around the Near North Side of St. Louis struggle to find safe and affordable child care.  For those families with school-age children, the burden is eased somewhat during the school year, but when summer rolls around, the stress of child care again becomes a difficult burden to overcome.

The Youth & Family Center's Summer Day Camp gives struggling parents a safe and positive place where their children can enjoy summer vacation while mom and dad are at work.
