MICROSOFT MAKES $34,000 IN-KIND DONATION TO SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY IN NORTH CITY NEIGHBORHOODS
(ST.LOUIS) Jul. 12, 2006 Through its Unlimited Potential program, a global effort that focuses on improving IT skills for under-served individuals and communities, Microsoft has made an In-Kind donation of software to support the Access For All Technology Initiative, a program of The Youth & Family Center. The software is valued at $34,545.
The Microsoft donation will upgrade software on lab computers to ensure that program participants are operating the same software used in the academic and professional realms. Familiarity with such software and applications will prepare young people and working parents for successful transitions to new educational or professional endeavors.
The Access For All Technology Initiative increases the rate of computer knowledge, access and ownership among children and families living in low-income households and equips them with the skills to leverage technology to improve the quality of their lives.
The curriculum of the Initiative educates children and families living in low-income households to proficiency in computer applications, especially those that will advance them academically and professionally, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Staff and volunteers refurbish computers donated by area corporations, and place them, along with Hi-Speed Internet, in the homes of program participants. Each year, over 100 computers are placed free of charge, in low-income households.
The Youth & Family Center has operated on St. Louis’ Near North Side for over a century. Its programs are directed at young people ages 5-17 and include After School programs, Computer & Technology programs, Athletics, Tutoring & Educational programs and Life Skills Development programs.
